Why I Write What I Write

writing by J C Corcoran

Psalm 51:12-13 says … “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.
I have prayed those very words back to God several times in the past few years to remind me that God has instructed me to do that very thing. It all started back in 1988 when I was a guest speaker at a business meeting. One man at that meeting – a black man named Bill – stopped me as I was preparing to leave and told me this: “I am an evangelist and, as I heard you speaking, I felt impressed to pray for you and I believe, with all my heart, that God has instructed me to tell you that He wants you in ministry.”
I was flabbergasted, to say the least, and I couldn’t wait to get back to my home town of Flagstaff, AZ and talk to my pastor. After I explained to him what had happened, he surprised me even more by saying, “You know, Jack, I have read some of your work and I believe you are a good communicator so I don’t doubt that God has called you into some type of teaching ministry.”
It took several years, including two years at seminary and even preaching at several churches in and around Fort Worth, TX, for me to learn that I could write better than I could talk. So, I began writing a novel that was finally published in 2006. It only sold around 300 copies so I was quite disheartened about the whole thing. But God kept after me; He wouldn’t let me go; and He finally led me to that Scripture. He has indeed granted me a willing Spirit and so I need to teach others as God teaches me.
Another reason I write what I write is because of what it says in Haggai 2:18, which says, “From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid.” Well my friends, I think some of you might already know that we are the temple of the Lord. “For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (2 Corinthians 6:16).
We, Christian believers and followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ, are the temple of the Lord. Christ is our foundation.
And this country, the USA, once had that foundation. When this country was younger, its foundation was God. The schools taught from the Word of God (the bible). Now, you can’t mention His Name out loud in the public schools.
During the Christmas season, which is quickly coming upon us, we used to see manger scenes all around town; not just at the churches but in parks, stores, etc. – people were reminded of the meaning of Christmas (the birth of Christ) but No More! In fact, there are very few churches who display the manger scene outside. Inside you might see one, but unbelievers don’t go inside. And because of it the people don’t know.
And so I write. I write to remind the believers who they are in Christ and I write in the hopes that someone who doesn’t know might wander onto my site. And as the last part of Psalm 51:13 says, “sinners might turn back to God.”
And so I ask all of you, who do believe – if you will share these words of mine with others, you too will be doing the will of the Father. Keep in mind these words from Jesus in Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Thank you for listening. I remain your servant in Christ;
